Students Need Support Before a Mental Health Crisis Escalates

Tragedies within school communities must lead to concrete action. We need a system that identifies students experiencing psychological distress at an earlier stage and ensures they receive help before their situation develops into a more serious crisis.

The first step is regular population-wide screening and monitoring of children’s mental health and wellbeing. Anxiety, depressive symptoms and the effects of bullying often remain invisible to adults. Early identification of warning signs allows students to be referred for professional assessment and support. The second step is overcoming barriers to accessing mental healthcare. Long waiting times in the public healthcare system and shortages of qualified specialists, particularly outside major cities, can delay access to essential support. A child’s place of residence or their parents’ financial circumstances should not determine their chances of receiving help. Digital technologies offer a potential solution. Remote screening, consultations and regular monitoring can reach thousands of students at a relatively low cost per participant. These tools can help identify concerning changes earlier and enable specialists to prioritise students who require urgent assessment.

Bridge to Wellness Global Foundation is ready to coordinate a school-based programme focused on the early identification of mental health difficulties and the monitoring of student wellbeing. The Foundation proposes launching a pilot programme, evaluating its outcomes and subsequently expanding its reach.
